WIW 10.24.13 - This Looked a Lot Better in the Mirror

I like the idea of this outfit a lot, but think the blouse isn't quite right. Thinking about Angie's blog post today, I think the blouse is too fluid for this rigid jacket.

It's hard to post outfits which I'm not thrilled with. It makes me feel vulnerable. I'm sucking it up and doing it anyway, because I learn a lot from this process.

Thanks, as always, for your comments.

Anywho...busy day today, so better get to it.

Jacket: Target
Blouse: Portofino from Express
Trousers: Lafayette
Shoes: Crown Vintage

Amy, I hear you -- it is really tough to post the ones that don't seem to work out. But I must disagree with your verdict. If it doesn't work, it has to do with the "feel" of it -- not the look of it. Because you look terrific!

It's possible that the neckline of the blouse is giving you a bit of trouble -- collapsing under the jacket's weight a bit. But it's also possible that if you just adjusted the tuck and the shoulders a bit, it wouldn't be an issue at all! Your trousers look 40s-elegant.

You look lovely today... so do not be hard on yourself. I really love your houndstooth jacket and how you have paired it with the bright blue blouse. And, about the blouse -- I think Suz has a point about just adjusting the shoulders a bit. Those fluid, silky tops seem to move around a bit during the day... especially around the collar area. I always seem to have that same concern.

I love the outfit!!  That jacket is a killer!  The blouse is drapey but I think a full tuck (looks a bit like semi tuck to me) might work better with this.  And if the pants have belt loops then a simple black belt might add some more structure.

But I would be surprised if you didn't get any compliment on this outfit today!  YLF Amy!

I get you, Amy.  I'm wearing a jacket/hoodie look today.  NOT my typical look.  I swear the hood is too small, making my head look HUGE by comparison.  Will I post?  Undecided.  Am I glad I'm trying new things?  Absolutely!

I agree with Suz -- I'd play with the tuck here.  Perhaps a true, vintage 1978 tuck would make a difference, particularly with a nice belt.  I find I sometimes need to tuck into, pardon me, my panties, to keep things from shifting.

It's also possible that it really does look better IRL.  The camera has one point of you, and certainly doesn't capture "fluid."  Everything is 2-D.  Wanna pop over for lunch so I can see it in 3-D?

    Hmmm Amy you look great.
But Suz is on to something. It may feel off and not look ;)

Amy, The colors look great!  I wonder too if it might look better IRL when you are moving.  Try retucking the sides a bit.

I like this outfit a lot, I think it is soft and elegant.  I'm not sure I would like it quite as much with a crisp blouse.

I agree with Suz that the neckline may be solved by adjusting the tucking of the top - those portofino blouses are slippery!

Beth Ann, I'd love nothing more than to have lunch with you :)

Thanks ladies. I'm sure you're right about the tucking issue. I don't want to do a classic tuck because of my short-waist, but I should adjust it some.

I also think it's the way you are standing. I like that blue with the black and white of the jacket.

Um, I like looking at your pictures because I expect to see a hot mess but am always disappointed! You look really wonderful and I think the blouse is great. I think it's a combination of the tuck and the posture. I wouldn't change a thing! You look gorgeous and so polished!

So if this looked better in the mirror, then I think I need one of those wonderful mirrors too, because I think this already looks way beyond fantastic in the photo!!!  You look so elegant! I love the crisply patterned, high contrast jacket against the brilliant blue of the blouse (I need to get to Express!) and think it all just works perfectly on you.  My coloring is similar to yours, so I'm furiously taking notes!

I have a shirt like that also, it's just not structured enough, but if you can manage to do a tight tuck (no blousing out), and add a belt, it would work I think.  Another way I wear mine is unbuttoned a little more w/a black cami under it (loose and easy)  You may also try buttoning it more (if you have a button up there), because the shirt just tends to sink - even without a jacket it flops onto itself.

I have been feeling the same way, although you look mighty good in this outfit to me!

Congrats on pushing yourself to post the ones you are not sure about because that is where we get learn more!
That shade of blue is spectacular for you!  I definitely agree that it has to be a feel situation because it looks wonderful!

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

Thank you! I feel better about this, especially after some adjustments while at work.

I love the '70s feel of this outfit Amy, and to my eye it's a great combination of rigidity and movement. I adore the French blue with the black and white.

I also think it is your pose or the way your coat is hanging that is throwing you off. I absolutely love that jacket and love it with the blue blouse. Retuck and stand proud - you look wonderful!
