WIW 01/17/13 - Bipolar Outfit

My emotions were all over the place this morning when I got dressed. I was determined to banish the blues, so I threw on a hectically colorful top. At the same time, I felt like I needed lots of structure to bolster my forced cheerfulness so threw on the black jacket and trousers. The blue booties were an afterthought. I'm not sure if this outfit is successful or not, but it got me through the day.

What I am sure of, though, is that YLF is a generous and supportive community. I don't think I would have made it through this week with my chin up if it weren't for your support.

I've got some REALLY good news to share! I confronted management today and explained to them that the review process had been demoralizing and that I didn't feel as if I had any concrete things I could do to improve in the future.

The amazing thing is they actually listened to me. They shredded my first evaluation form and rewrote it using my suggestions. It turned out to be a lot more useful for my development and helped reassure me that I was on the right track. In addition, they will be changing the entire review process next year. Some of the changes were due to my feedback, particularly when it comes to what kinds of critique are constructive.

Chalk one up for the little guy today.

You look amazing in this outfit. Classy, sophisticated, colorful, bright, and breezy. Love every piece of it, including your sassy expression! :-)

And LOVE your feedback on the review process. You are so in the right and your manager really should be ashamed of herself. She is no manager. I hope she has learned from this experience!

Thanks, Kristin. They did a lot of apologizing, so I think the message got through!

*applause* You go, girl! Taking up for yourself like that takes a lot of courage, and I'm so glad that they listened and then acted on your experience. This is great!

Your outfit is great, too. The blue booties peeking out from under your trousers is my favorite part! Love!!

Here's to a better end than the start of your week, and to a much deserved weekend!

Amy --- This is a classic meets artistic look that is quite cheerful, but definitely ready for work. The booties are my favorite bit, too, and I hope to see more of them.

Congrats on standing up for yourself and improving the workplace in the process! Hope you have a relaxing, recharging weekend!

I love this outfit Amy! I love the bold colours in contrast to black!

And kudos on confronting management! One really does have to communicate and speak their mind and it's better done than resenting them or regretting you have not confronted! So proud of you!

  • crow replied 11 years ago

So much for your not being assertive enough to get anything done! Congrats Amy--for being appropriately assertive, for instigating a much-needed overhaul of a faulty system and for handling a tough situation with style and grace. Wow!

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

Amy, that's a great outfit. I love the purple dangly earrings. Glad to know that you brought out your concerns with the management and they gave you a patient hearing. Also, just wanted to know if you're a lawyer? I'm asking you cause I am one.

  • rute replied 11 years ago

    And the outfit, stellar:)

  • Claudia replied 11 years ago

Great going, Amy! Kudos for productively standing up for yourself -- and for fairness. The big extra benefit is how much doing that helps others in the future, a rewarding legacy for having the backbone to speak up.

And, as always, you look beautiful.

  • catherine replied 11 years ago

Wow and wow. I refer both to your extraordinary outfit and your consummate professionalism. Good on you.

  • moira replied 11 years ago

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Thank you so much, everyone. You are so nice!

Asingh, I'm a paralegal. I do a lot of the same work as associates (analyzing documents, drafting pleadings, interviewing clients/witnesses, etc.), but can't provide legal advice or argue in court, etc.

  • teri replied 11 years ago

Late to this thread, but good for you! I am glad that your comments were taken seriously.

  • texstyle replied 11 years ago

So happy to hear this Amy! Esp. glad to hear you made a point to communicate your feelings and work to get them resolved. Very pro-active and positive approach.

AND you looked great all week too!

  • JulieJohn replied 11 years ago

Amy, no time to read others' comments, but I absolutely ADORE your outfit! The zing of pink at the earlobes really is a surprising perk, and the black, ... just ooh la la! You are wearing IT instead of it wearing you, if ya know what I mean.

So proud of your victory for Team Underdog! You are my hero, because you stood up for what is right in a constructive way. I love the response you got. Isn't it funny how that happens sometime, a really great response after a really crappy event? It's almost like the universe was daring you to take a stand, and then rewarded you for doing it. Couldn't you just have gotten the reward without all the heartache? Ah, well.

    You are a champion.

  • siniestra replied 11 years ago

love ur outfit specially that blouse!!! tho i don't see if very well the patter it reminds me the handmade embroidery of guatemala

  • rachylou replied 11 years ago

Good for you! Don't make me soap-box as human performance improvement professional and performance reviews - esp. yearly ones. The first thing to do to improve performance, you know, is to chuck them all together.

Love the peeps of blue in the shoes and the pink in the earrings. The whole outfit sings!

  • cciele replied 11 years ago

So glad you gave your input and they listened! Woohoo!

And I love how the booties and earrings pick up on the colors of your shirt. You look wonderful!

  • dizzys replied 11 years ago

This is amazing news! So glad you decided to escalate err...discuss the matter with management.

  • stitchywitch replied 11 years ago

I love the blue shoes with that top. And good for you for standing up for yourself! My husband had a similar review situation at his old job, and I know it's one reason he wanted to leave.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

    Thank you, everyone!

  • Nadya replied 11 years ago

Here I've been eyeing a pair of cobalt booties and you show up in this PERFECT outfit. I love the top with those shoes against the structure of the suit.

Way to go on resolving this! As a manager, I can tell you that some managers are just clueless about performance reviews, feedback, and coaching. The fact that your company acknowledges that is wonderful, and the way you stood up for yourself is awesome.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Sorry to comment so late, Amy.

KILLER news and outfit! I just knew you would come out on top :)

  • Thistle replied 11 years ago

    Really like the outfit.

Better yet, so glad you stood up for yourself. Even better that you were heard!

I've been away but had to say - that's terrific, well done for hanging in there even when you didn't feel like it!!

Love the outfit too - the boots make it "you" imo.

  • Ornella replied 11 years ago

Fantastic turn of the events, I'm so happy for you Amy!!

I love how you translate your mood and emotional needs into the wardrobe. You look fantastic (and I want to steal that top ever since I first saw it on you).

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

Just seeing this and I have to add my "Hooray" to the chorus! Congratulations on being such a powerful agent of change.

And of course the outfit is beyond fab!
