WIW - Oops--Too Wacky for Work

Well...It was cool in my imagination. I even felt good when I left home this morning.

Unfortunately, I don't think this went over so well at work. People kept staring at my hips when the were talking to me, so I suspect they though my skirt was caught up funny under my jacket...as if it got stuck in the waistband of my underwear or something.

Oh well.

Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

Jacket: swap find (I'm in denial about this being too small)
Dress: Made-by-me
Boots: Clarks

I love this, Amy! If you were one of my co-workers, I would have been staring at you in undisguised admiration!

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

People were staring at your hips? I am skeptical. I think the dress would look better with an open jacket though. Regardless you look very pretty in those colors and the dress looks amazing - you made it? I want to see it without the jacket.

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

I like it too, but I like whackadoodle.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    KILLER

Too wacky for work or not, you are so pinned in this outfit. Rich colours! You look so pretty and elegant.

  • replied 11 years ago

I love it. I hear you on the non fabber judgement. I think this is pretty safe though.
I'm loving Angie's pinnage by the way.

  • Jamie replied 11 years ago

Fab, fab, fab!!! Wear it to work again...and soon!

  • Mellllls replied 11 years ago

i like it. i think wearing the jacket open though might have mitigated the confused looks. but personally, i like it as is

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

This is TOTALLY awesome. I love it. And IS the jacket too small, really, or is it supposed to fit shrunken? It looks quite intentional, oh Lady Steampunk!

  • K. Period. replied 11 years ago

I'm loving this look too! Very steampunk in the most wonderful way. I've even got the perfect pair of boots for you to wear with it...(and when I say have, I mean literally in my closet waiting for me to find something as fabulous as this to wear with them.)

What do they know? You look fab in this Amy. I love that dress - you made this one, didn't you? I love the unusual hemline and shape - that's what gives the outfit visual interest.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

I love this - it's such a cool steampunk vibe. You made your own hitched skirt? Sheesh, they must have been staring in awe!

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

haha, well, you gals are good for the spirit. I was feeling a bit embarrassed by the end of the day.

K can Shop, you better keep your doors locked, because I'm tempted to come over there and relieve you of those AMAZING Boots.

    I need a top hat too ;)

  • velvetychocolate replied 11 years ago

Amazing outfit and I'm willing to bet that the only reason people at work were staring is becaue it is/was so fab on you!

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

OMG I LOVE this! And FWIW I would totally wear this to work.

Seriously, I have been looking for a hitched skirt like this for ages. I am kind of sad to know that you made this because I can't go and buy one for myself! (Perhaps I need to buy a sewing machine after all...even though I have been resisting for ages. )

  • christy replied 11 years ago

Ah Amy - I hate those days! For what it's worth I think you look great! :) Those colors are spectacular on you and that dress is amazing.

  • ironkurtin replied 11 years ago

You look amazing. I doubt your coworkers were thinking this looked strange. Really.

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Amy -- you need to wear this to the opera, to dinner, an art gallery. It's gorgeous. I understand conservative environments, and I also get the desire to dress more creatively. This is one of my favorites of yours!

  • Kiwichik replied 11 years ago

    Love it

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I have the perfect solution: come to work with me! Then both of us will fit in. :)

Love it all, of course - and Lyn's boots would look great with it, too!

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Amy havent read all the comments but wow!!! I LOVE this. It it stylish, creative and you still look very professional. This silhouette is really edgy but also very feminine. I just love it.

  • fashionista replied 11 years ago

WOW!!!! They might have been staring due to admiration. Perfect outfit combination one can think of. And you look glowing in this outfit. Continue wearing it.

  • Lantana replied 11 years ago

I would stare too, in admiration. The dress looks good and so do you in it. Perhaps your work mates found it inrtiguing?

  • bj1111 replied 11 years ago

love...one of your best. that skirt shape is so now. the jacket really shows off your waist. fun fun fun.

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

It's just a beautiful fabric and artistic, lovely skirt. I love the silhouette with shrunken jacket (and it totally looks on purpose) but obviously the workmates don't appreciate sartorial splendor. You need some occasions to wear this - gallery or opera or ballet! It's fantastic.

  • fieldmouse replied 11 years ago

A very cool outfit! I -love- this kind of silhouette and wear it all the time. Could it be you were a little self-conscious about others' reactions, so it simply seemed to you that they were staring at your skirt hips, when their eyes/glances were moving the same way they usually would? OTOH, if they -were- staring, then they were probably just unused to this type of silhouette, in which case you should wear it to work more often to habituate them to it. :D

  • RoseandJoan replied 11 years ago

It is a glorious outfit which really accentuates your tiny waist. Besides, confusing your coworkers can sometimes be fun.

  • greenglove replied 11 years ago

I love this look on you! That jacket is the perfect shape with that skirt!
You look just gorgeous, the colors are so elegant! You were being stared at because of how great you look!

  • DragonflyJane replied 11 years ago

I'm loving this look, I certainly don't think it's too wacky for work at all. What pattern did you use to make the dress? I'd love to try something similar myself.

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

Gorgeous dress and works brilliantly with that jacket and the boots. Maybe this is a different style that your coworkers are not used to yet. They will adjust to it the next time you wear it.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Thanks for all of your nice comments, ladies.

The climate of my office doesn't really encourage sartorial experimentation, but sometimes I can't help myself.

    DragonflyJane, it's McCalls 6321. Good luck :)

  • HelenInCanada replied 11 years ago

Love it, love it, love it!

  • replied 11 years ago

I have always loved this dress on you Amy! And that jacket is NOT too small. It's closed and there is no pulling anywhere. It's just *cropped* or shrunken. I LOVE it!

  • cciele replied 11 years ago

Wear that outfit with pride Amy -- you look smashing in it! Maybe your coworkers will broaden their horizons satorially, with repeated exposure to your great style.

  • cheryl replied 11 years ago

You are adorable. I love this dress, you look great.

  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago

Just found this through the A/E post & had to comment. I love this on you - everything is perfect & not wacky at all imo.

  • replied 11 years ago

Somebody has to make them think outside the box.

Maybe you interpreted their admiration as something else. I love the dress, maybe a different jacket but it is not a deal breaker. Love the colors, makes me wish I could sew

  • Tricia replied 11 years ago

I love this and it's not wacky at all. I'd have been staring at you trying to figure out how I could duplicate this outfit!

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Ah, you ladies are so nice!

  • replied 11 years ago

Amy! This is so awesome. I am totally going to make this dress and wear it, even. It rocks and I would love to be able to have such a cool dress in my wardrobe.

  • pil replied 11 years ago

Amy, this is absolutely stunning on you.

  • Joy replied 11 years ago

You look gorgeous. Keep wearing it and your coworkers will figure it out.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

You would totally rock that dress, Ceit!

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

    A beautiful ensemble Amy!

  • replied 11 years ago

Oh wow! I love this! I think you should wear it again!!

  • rute replied 11 years ago

No, it's perfect! Classic and artsy at the same time!

  • lynne replied 11 years ago

Not too wacky at all! If your workplace doesn't "encourage sartorial experimentation" as you so graciously put it, someone has to start to push the envelope.
When I was still teaching I wore a hitched skirt with an eyelet underskirt. Someone pulled me aside to whisper that my slip was showing.
