Neighborly Colors and Some Youthful Hijinks

I'm battling a case of the blues right now. I don't know if it's the typical mid-winter depression I get or if it's due to something else, but I'm struggling to keep my attitude positive lately. If anyone else is coping with this, I'm sending you a big hug!

Aida's color project sparked an idea for today's outfit. I thought playing around with blue and purple, two of my favorite colors, might cheer me up. I can't say these are my nicest clothes, but I did make the top, skirt and necklace. A little bit of handmade gives me warm fuzzies too.

Also, I tried a little bit of pattern-mixing. Unfortunately, I think it's hard to see the houndstooth print on my stockings. Next time I try this, there will be more drama, lol!

Bonus pictures of my crazy kids...

Your kids are so cute! Sorry you are having a hard time. zi love your colorful outfit. You always do such a nice job on your sewn items. Also, I love your necklace! I've tried making some jewelry, but haven,t loved what I made. Yours, on the other hand, is fab!

Amy, hugs to you. I too have not been feeling like myself for weeks. Today, I gave myself a pep talk and am trying to be less complacent.

Ha, bluesy minds must think alike because I'm doing Aida's analogous colors this week as well. Today was red-violet paired with red. Tomorrow is violet paired with red-violet. Other 3 pairings: yellow & yellow-green; blue & blue-violet; and blue-green with blue. I'll post them all together on the weekend.

I'm always amazed at your sewing skills. I don't see anything wrong with these pieces. YLF!

Your kids are adorable! Hmmm....my husband also does this hiding and popping out trick while I take my pics! What does that say about him? : )

Pretty colors, Amy (I'm tickled my color experiment inspired you)! I love seeing all your handmade pieces, they're so amazing! I like your pattern mix (and have similar houndstooth tights!). This top would look lovely with wide-leg pants or flared jeans, too! Sorry to hear you have the mid-winter blues. Fashion-wise I find light neutrals, fun colors, and statement accessories can really help lift my mood (hence the color experiment). I think we should arrange a shopping trip with Brenda to help combat the blues :D

Great outfit, Amy! I love the colors on you as well as the style. You did such a nice job on the fit--very flattering. The necklace is amazing, too. I really like that style. I, too, laughed at your "trouble" label! And I'm with you, fighting the winter blues lately. Hope it's seasonal, and I like your approach. Wearing favorite clothes, especially something handmade, can boost one's spirits, can't it? I find going through the motions--getting to the gym, putting on the fun outfits, etc.--helps, because at some point the acts seem to rub off on my mood and make things a little better.

You look very pretty in those colours Amy and I'm incredibly impressed you made them yourself. Wow!!!

I'm very sorry to hear you've been feeling a little down lately and I truly hope that you are feeling better soon. I always tell myself when I feel like this that I've gotta feel the lows every now and then, so that I can really appreciate the highs.

Your kids look so happy and carefree! I love your color mix and pattern mix - I can totally imagine the tights. I'm sorry you're feeling down - even here in CA we get a bit of that, since there is less light overall. Hugs to you - some exercise and vitamins usually helps, in case you find the feelings hard to shake. :T

Your kids are so cute! LOL about the TROUBLE!

Sorry you've been feeling down. You look wonderful though! Hope you're feeling better soon!

Love the expressions of your kiddos faces! Trouble indeed. I knew you were a great seamstress but a jewelry maker too? Wow, I'm impressed. That is a fabulous necklace. So intricate and interesting. Try to get some sunshine and fresh air today - that always helps me. Hugs.

Amy, so sorry you have been feeling low. It is a tough time of year for so many, I know. I was having a rough time of it myself before the holiday but have started to feel a bit more myself as the light begins to return. And, for me at least, YLF has been a real help, because it's a source of fun and pleasure to brighten the hard days.

Your outfit is lovely! The top looks so cozy and comfortable; I'd wear that any time, not just on the blue days! And look at your creative skill—jewelry making, too?

    Your kids are so cute!

January is always a hard month for me too, even living in a relatively warm and sunny place. But you look great - I love the pattern on your top and can't believe you made most of your outfit. Love the boots with the stockings too. Your kids look super happy and completely oblivious to your blues - that is also fab!

Oh, Amy, sorry you're feeling down; I'm struggling at the moment and will be sending along happy, return-to-normal-self vibes to get you back into the swing. As usual, loving your whimsical, casually stylish combos and completely fashion-unrelated and totally mischievous progeny! (Your adorable daughter...is she studying to become a ninja?) The plates on your wall look ceramic and handmade--I suspect that your entire home is filled with colorful, beautiful, home-made items by you and your children.

Amy, let me begin by saying that I am sorry you are feeling down lately. I too have been battling a "funk" as the days got shorter and the weather turned colder, so big hugs to you. Now, moving on to the fashion, I love this color combination and stand in awe of your sewing abilities. I think the pattern on the tights adds an unxpected twist to the look. And the kids are just adorable!

  • lyn67 replied 12 years ago

Beautiful color combo(love love love the purples and blues with greys here) and kids are so cute!!!!! you cannot feel blues with their chit-chat arround Amy, isn't it! so let them lighten up your time!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 12 years ago

Amy - your skill with sewing continues to amaze me! The skirt and top are gorgeous - I can only dream of having such talent (and patience). I think you look absolutely lovely!

Sending you all sorts of happy thoughts - and your kids are adorable!

I forgot to say how cute your cherubs are!

Amy, I'm with you. Every winter around this time I hit a wall, and February is the worst, with no end in sight. BLAH! I've been forcing myself to exercise, which helps me get to sleep more easily.

You are glowing in those colors, and I am so desperate to drag out my sewing machine again because of you! Question: have you ever made a newsboy cap? I want to try sewing some hats and would love a recommendation for a good pattern, before I just destroy one of mine to create my own.

  • Debora replied 12 years ago

Sending you a big hug and thoughts of spring! I love your color combination and your children are beautiful. Your first photo put a smile on my face. Take care, dear Amy.

Aww, you ladies are so sweet!

I'm at work now, so I don't have time to respond in detail, but I do want to thank you for all the good vibes you sent my way.

I'll respond about hats and sewing and kids, etc. later today. Thank you!!!!
