My NAS Loot: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I'm a little embarrassed to show you all that I purchased, because it's a lot. However, I've thought long and hard over the past year about the gaps in my wardrobe, i.e. the items I often wished I had rather than things I occasionally had a hankering for. Each one of these items fit my criteria in some manner, so I know that I'll get a lot of use out of the things I'm keeping. I'll have to keep looking for replacements for the items that didn't work out.

Since this shopping expedition had a big price tag for me, I'd appreciate honest feedback on the pieces. I don't want to hang on to something that isn't quite right.

Without further ado...

The Good!

(1 & 2) Miss Sixty Asymmetrical Soft Shell Jacket - When I ordered this, I worried that I wasn't going to be happy with it because it's not lined. The lack of a lining is not a problem in this case. The interior is nice and furry/fuzzy. The fabric is very stretchy making it comfortable to wear. It's also smooth, so lint probably won't stick to it.

I LOVE big collars and asymmetry, so am thrilled with this purchase!

(3) Trina Turk 'Rai' Print Silk Blouse - I love this shape on me. It balances out my pear figure nicely and feels cheeky. Love the stripes and bold colors. The only thing I'm concerned about is how snug it is over the hips.

(4) Lafayette 148 New York 'Audrey' Silk Blouse - Earlier in the year I bought a Banana Republic silk blouse in a very similar color. I ended up donating it because I couldn't keep the front closed over my bosom, even with fashion tape. This fits better and the fabric is much nicer, I think. Only one concern: it's tight over my hips so the front edges pull apart at the bottom.

(5 & 6) Lafayette 148 New York 'Melodic' Tweed Jacket - It's purple tweed with metallic threads. I've died and gone to heaven. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

(5 & 6) Lafayette 148 New York Stretch Wool Pants - I bought these in both eggplant and loden. I also have a black pair that I wear all the time. They're my favorite pants. The fit is great at my waist and down through the crotch area, which is usually impossible to fit on me. It doesn't look quite right in that area in these photos, but I think that's because I'm standing funny.

Two downsides to these for me: they're not lined and this is the unhemmed length. I wish they were 1/2-1 inch longer so I could make a deeper hem in them. When I'm hem them, I can only take up 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch before I'd be violating the law of PPL.

(13) Me Too Leopard Print Shoes and Cole Haan Air Monica Shoes - I've been looking for the right pair of animal print shoes for a long time and finally found them. They're comfy too! I also needed a pair of black shoes for work. I liked the two tone version of the Air Monicas better, but needed black, so picked those instead. These are REALLY comfy!

The Bad (?)

(7) Halogen® Ballet Neck Stretch Modal Tee - very long, which might be good for tucking, but very thin and the neckline is too wide on my narrow upper body. I had hoped this would be a good layering t-shirt for me, but am not really sure whether I should hang on to it or return and look for something better. I also bought black and teal.

The Ugly - well, not ugly, but Disappointing...

(8- 12) John Carlisle Leather Moto Jacket - This is the one item I was dying to get when I first saw the NAS catalog. Teal is one of my favorite colors and it looks good on me. Unfortunately, the leather jacket is a lot thinner than I expected, I don't like the look of the lining and the fit isn't right. It flattens my bust line, cuts off the circulation from my upper to my lower torso (i.e. tight in the hips) and bulges out at the back. Le sigh.

You launched me into orbit when I saw outfit #5!! Good grief. KILLER to the power of KILLER from head to toe!!! YOUR BEST EVER - and rivals your holiday outfit last year.

Now excuse me while I recover from your sizzling style quotient, Amy. I will comment on the rest after I've calmed down.

    *fanning myself*

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Can I wear that purple suit every day? I'm that in love with it, lol :)

  • Isabel replied 11 years ago

HOLY COW , what great stuff !!! Don't be embarrassed at all. This is the time to do it.

I am LOVE...ING the soft shell. It particularly looks good zipped up. The collar looks ruched, is it ? I love that.

4,5,6......the colors are spectacular on you. The pants in 4 look as if they are straight leg and very well fitting.

I can see why you like the wool pants in 5 and 6. They are really wonderful. It is a bummer that they are not at least half lined.

I agree with you regarding the teal jacket...I don't think that it is a keeper and I also don't like the bulging in the back. That would annoy me.

I say pass on #7 unless you do plan on a tucking in layering piece or letting it show a little longer under a button down. ( I have seen that look recently and I like it. )

    The shoes are 10s.

    YAYYYYYYY !!!!

Now, # 3, I am not sure what it is about the top, but it is not a WOW to me. I cannot figure out why.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Thanks Isabel! The jeans are oldies but goodies :) I think the Trina Turk blouse will look better when styled differently. Perhaps with a pencil skirt? It's also possible that I'm on a high right now from a box of pretty new things and will need a little time to look at it more objectively. Right now, all I see is pretty colors and silk. Whee!

  • Jem replied 11 years ago

I agree with all of your choices (and dislikes) You look amazing and of course the purple outfit is stellar! I'm loving seeing how you are using Angie's style advise on how your style should go. These pieces look amazing on you.

  • K. Period. replied 11 years ago

Amy don't hem them yourself! NAS purchases are considered full price purchases and they will hem them for you for free!!! Ask them what they can do to make the seam the right length--they should be able to sew seam tape to them at the very least to extend it so that you don't get a weird shallow seam. (You can tell that I don't sew myself, other than fun stuff, can't you?!?). I know you sew, though, so maybe you have less of an aversion than I do to sewing hems (the great drudgery of sewing in my mind--they sewing equivalent of folding clothes) or maybe you have a great idea to extend the seam depth. Would a thick ribbon work?

Back to the real topic, though. Your picks are gorgeous. Totally gorgeous. Great choices and really practical while being fun.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

    Thanks gals.

K can shop - thanks for the tip. I was aware of that, but I am happy to hem them myself. It's very easy and I can do it in a manner that makes me happy. I'm a control freak, lol.

  • Nadya replied 11 years ago

Oh my! That Lafayette jacket is beyond gorgeous on you. I don't blame you for wanting to wear it every day! And we're leopard pump twins ;-).

Love all your picks - so sorry the teal jacket didn't work out. I had that happen with a pair of boots I was sure I was going to love but fizzled. More room for something else....

  • replied 11 years ago

WOW! Gorgeous loot! I love everything you love. I don't think the waist of the printed top is a problem at all. I'm crazy for the long coat, the purple silk blouse and the tweed blazer! I'm not that excited about the layering T, and I'm sorry about the leather jacket. There will be others, so not to worry! Good job with your strategic shopping!

  • Jenava replied 11 years ago

Oooooh, I love those trousers....I am DYING for those in the green color....they look awesome on you, and I think we have similar figures!

The teal jacket is great...how often are you REALLY going to wear this zipped up??

the other items are great as well...you know you could hem those tees; the sleeves and neckline are awesome and, hey, it's harder to find that than a shorter length, right?

  • cciele replied 11 years ago

I love love love the purple tweed jacket! *swoon*

And the teal jacket, I think it is meant for someone with a really long torso... unfortunate, it's a great color.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Ah, disappointed the teal jacket didn't work - would have been so pretty with the purples! I like the rest, though, minus the tee. I don't think tunic-length tees should be so thin... why do they make them? I am really loving #3 as well!

  • Sylvie replied 11 years ago

Wow, you did so well! The purple tweed jacket is just stunning on you. I can see that you put your seamstress knowledge to good use and you're really honing in on pieces with good construction and fabric - the best of the best.

With the halogen tee shirts, I've decided that they may be soft, but their only purpose is to be a hidden underlayer They show every single lump and bump on me and I can't imagine being able to wear them as a standalone top. Your call on whether that works for you.

Re: teal jacket, I vote return. It doesn't fit well and I wasn't impressed by the leather quality.

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

That teal jacket meant to be a dark comedy version of Cinderella's glass slipper or something? Everyone loves it and it fits no one, seemingly! Also, I think in real-life photos, even the colour excites me less than the catalogue did. Let it go and don't look back, Amy!

You have gorgeous, gorgeous things already! I'm squealing right along with your for the tweed jacket. What a love of a 'suit'! And the 'Rai' blouse is lovely too --- the fit isn't bothering me at all. Love the pants, very elegant fall and yummy colours. And you look adorable in the soft-shell (and well is in the photos where you're making faces!).

The long T-shirt gives me pause --- think it's a bit too long to tuck into pants maybe and will bunch irritatingly under there. I vote pass... and hope something better comes your way, though I love the colour and even the neckline on you.

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Amy I love everything you ate keeping but cannot get past the jacket in 5/6 to really look at anything else. It is stunning!

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

I am in love with the print and colors of the Trina Turk blouse. I hope you end up working it out so I can live vicariously. #5 is flawless and perfect. I also really like the 1st jacket and am sorry about the leather, but there will be more. Good for you finding the right trousers and stocking up! Your photo shoot expressions are so much fun!

  • Laura replied 11 years ago

You look perfectly work-ready in the purple suit. I would take orders from you any day!! The Miss Sixty jacket is just as fab, and those shoes - wow! Great picks. I agree on the t-shirt and that teal leather jacket must have been made simply to torture all of us here.

  • lyn67 replied 11 years ago

Oh, great loot Amy, and metallic purple jacket is a dream, indeed. I would also die to have it! Coat and shoes also fab but see why tee and leather jacket are going back, -sigh!
If having troubles letting down and hemming trousers too short which don't have enough of a fabric for a deep enough hem inside, I suggest sewing a simillar color and texture fabric quite to the edges and fold the pants back quite there on the seam, perhaps needs reinforced with a riband to keep it's shape then iron well, nobody will know ther difference as this will be only inside....hope that makes sense for you.

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 11 years ago

Amy, you got some excellent pieces so don't feel bad about the good and the lovely.

The asymetrical jackets looks great so is a keeper. Great jacket and pants fit is really good. It feels nice when you find a hard to fit item that works that well. Both pairs of shoes are nice - I love the animal print.

I am not loving the TT top in 3 but this may be just me. I find small patterns with more than two colors to be distracting so I have a bit of a poisoned eye. I also think you can do better for the leather jacket and the top in 7 isn't fab. I think you can do better on this one too. The color is wonderful on you though so another top with more substance or better drape in this color would be nice.

  • replied 11 years ago

You made some fab choices, lady! Outfit five is totally off the hook amazing -- LOVE! Love the Miss Sixty jacket, the blouses, everything else too!

And your expressions are too cute! You and NicoleB must have gone to the same modeling school of adorableness.

Funny story about moto jackets. A few months ago I found a teal one heavily discounted, really beautiful color, and brought it home. My husband was convinced that it looked like maternity wear because of the zippers near the boobs -- he said it looked like I was about to whip out a boob and nurse an infant! He really hated it, so back it went.

  • Lisa replied 11 years ago

Some great items you have here. I especially like all the colors in top #3 on you. And I vote pass on that leather jacket in #9 for one with a better fit. Great job shopping NAS!

  • replied 11 years ago

I love, LOVE #5, Lafayette is definitely your brand. I agree with your assessment on the rejects and the silk top on #3.

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the photo shoot, particularly your willingness to show what didn't work. We all have this happen in the fitting room, and it's nice to know we're not alone! Besides, it helps to see items on others if we're interested in them ourselves.

Like everyone else, #5 makes me swoon! The black coat and striped top is fab as well, along with the shoes.

BTW -- No need to apologize for getting several items. A well-dressed woman gives a little flair to the world, and she wears a little extra confidence, too!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Wow - you did REALLY well Amy! And I completely agree with your likes and dislikes. Everything in pics #1 - 6 is fabulous. I adore the top in #3 and don't think it's too tight on your hips at all - beautiful colours and shape. And your shoes choices are delicious - I'm drooling over those animal print beauties!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Note to Amy: Always check out Lafayette stuff for work.

Now that I have recovered from your incredible fabness, I can comment on the rest :)

    - LOVE the Miss Sixty. It's a top pick!

    - LOVE the Trina blouse. *So Amy*

    - LOVE the shoes - some of my top picks :)

    - (You know that everything in #5 is too sublime for words).

    - I like the teal jacket!

Absolutely killer stuff! This is how to shop the NAS. Well played :)

  • Isis replied 11 years ago

    I love it all......Just fantastic! But I must say that #5 is a show-stopper!

  • Makrame replied 11 years ago

I agree with Angie, #5 is amazing on you! Gorgeous purple jacket!

Not sure about the Trina Turk top, although I like the colors and pattern but I am not sure this is my favorite on you.

I have a Miss SIxty soft shell jacket/coat from last year's NAS that looks a bit similar to yours (black with zippers but not asymmetrical). I love it and got a few compliments on it - the only problem is that after 3-4 months of heavy wear, the knit insets on the sleeves are pilling. I need to figure out if I can restore it to its original look by removing the pills.

Nice shoes, too - I especially like the Cole Haans.

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

I'm surprising myself by liking the blouse in #3. Miss Sixty jacket is great. LOVE the tweed jacket. The teal moto looks fine from the front, but not so great on the back.

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

I'm surprising myself by liking the blouse in #3. Miss Sixty jacket is great. LOVE the tweed jacket. The teal moto looks fine from the front, but not so great on the back.

  • Sunita replied 11 years ago

Amy-the Lafayette jacket looks amazing! Mine arrived yesterday, and I'm in love too! I'm thinking I'll keep it.

Love the other items in #5-6 too...those pants really work well on you. I found the legs too wide on me.

    I like the black topper.

I'd pass on the ballet T. I didn't even bother trying mine on...the material is too flimsy.

I'm with you on the teal jacket. In real life, it doesn't look as good as it did in the catalog. Like you, I found it thin and ill-fitting. But the color is fabulous on you!

    Great job all around!

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

OMG, I love the Lafayette jacket on you so much! The color, shape, and material are all amazing. It's great with the pants in #5 too. Love the Miss Sixty jacket as well.

So sad about the teal jacket. It was the only big-ticket thing in the catalog that I was even really considering, but based on the measurements and all the reviews from you pre-shoppers so far, I am 99% sure it will be far too long and boxy for me. Sad. The color is amazing though. Fingers crossed that more teal leather jackets are in store this fall!

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

Amy, you did well! If you are embarassed with the number of things you bought at NAS I should be crawling under the rock in shame for what I have bought last year!
Of course these purple jacket and trousers are perfect and PURPLE! You look amazing in them. Actually you made me want to try these trousers on if they are available in the store on Saturday...even though I thought I have enough wth a pair of grey wide leg and a pair of taupe Editors...the jacket is so gorgeous it pains!
The balck topper is really nice and well fitting, I like it. I also like both pairs of shoes - well, I ordered both of them too so i must like them, right?
The purple shirt is nice but it would drive me nuts to have it too tight in the hips. I would size up if possible or return unless you plan to tuck it in all the time. You also can see if you can move buttons a bit ...
Too bad teal jacket does not work: I love the color (on you and on me) and was eyeing it as well.
Th printed blouse is nice but something about it I don't like and I cnanot pinpoint what it is :-(
I cannot wait to see you WIW in your perfect purple "suit"!!!!

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

May I just say how KILLER you look in fuschia-purple! I am really sorry the long modal t isn't working for you because the color is fantastic. The teal jacket is also a gorgeous color for you and the style is pretty but if it doesn't fit properly then back it goes! What an incredible haul you made. The coat is darling and the suit in #5 is utterly amazing on you!

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the feedback, ladies! I'm feeling pretty excited about all my new treasures.

  • Inge replied 11 years ago

I am SO SO smitten with your purple trousers and tweed jacket outfit that I can't really take in anything else for the time being. WOW!! Beyond stunning, Amy!
