Flustered by Fit & Flare

Angie's blog post yesterday made me worry a little bit about this fit and flare skirt which I have in my wardrobe--which I really like. The first photo illustrates why these skirts are problematic for short-waisted curvy figures.

Did I rescue the skirt with the way I styled it in the second photo or does it still not look right? Please be honest :) Perhaps I should give it up to a good home.

Oh yeah, the proportion of 2 along with the higher contrast really makes it work in my opinion.

  • Alassë replied 8 years ago

Yes, splendid proportions (and colour, and outfit) in 2.

  • Dee replied 8 years ago

I really like how the vest changes the proportions. I'm also team short-waist, so I'll need to try something like this too. Thanks!

Consider it rescued!  Good save, it's a very nice skirt.

It's amazing how the vest totally changes the look of the skirt. Winner!

  • Diana replied 8 years ago

I love it in #2.  Another thing you might try is long and drapey over the skirt, which is something I've been liking lately.  You have to be OK with waist surrender though.

  • Bonnie replied 8 years ago

The vest really makes the outfit - great save!!

  • celia replied 8 years ago

The vest looks great with the skirt. I also like Diana's idea.

Btw, nice to see you in the forum again.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

You ABSOLUTELY perfected the look in #2 by lengthening your short waist. WELL DONE. Killer.

    What Angie said!

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

Thanks, very instructive for me! You nailed it. You have done me a favour!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad I don't have to ditch this skirt. It's really comfortable and I like the print :)

Diana, thank you for the other styling suggestion as well. I'm going to try that!

Rescued. As another short-waister, I also find that a short jacket like a jean jacket worn over a tucked shirt can also help re-establish proportions. Sometimes a belt is needed too.

  • Lucy replied 8 years ago

Perfect in #2 - showing us how it's done! I love the print too, so good to save it ....

  • Amy replied 8 years ago

I'm very happy, thanks to you all...a near fashion-disaster brought back from the brink. Thanks for your encouragement :)

  • replied 8 years ago

Yes! You've created a fab look I love the print of that skirt, and it really stands out now as the focal point of the outfit. Also like how the black vest balances the stockings. Nicely done!

  • unfrumped replied 8 years ago

That is truly inspired! Such a great illustration.
This is just the opposite of what I try to do! So it's extra fun to see proportion principles at work in various ways.
#2 is a fab outfit in fact, and not just "rescued".

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Definitely worth keeping for #2. Those are the perfect proportions for you with this skirt.

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

Amy, so great to see you again - I missed you!

Yes, #2 definitely works - proportions and colors are perfect.

  • Vix replied 8 years ago

Amy, agree about it being nice to see you and about #2 being a great look for fall.

    Hope to see more!

  • Gigi replied 8 years ago

Oh yes, no. 2 is definitely a winner. I like the skirt too, BTW.

I am curious about whether the proportions would look better in no. 1 if you wore your hair up (is that something you ever do?). I wonder if that would visually lengthen the neck and maybe extend the torso. (I'm not sure it would, but I am curious. I am growing my hair out and am starting to become aware of how different outfits look with my hair up vs. down.)

I haven't read the comments, but this skirt doesn't have to be rescued! It is simply killer as it is in nr 1, and gorgeous in nr 2, too:-).

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

Great save! The proportions of #2 are fantastic! You look radiant in black & white. I really love the outfit!

  • Mona replied 8 years ago

I am thrilled that the skirt has been saved. Love the simplicity of black and white in this outfit.

  • Sara L. replied 8 years ago

Wow, amazing how the vest completely changes the outfit.  You definitely saved the skirt.

  • replied 8 years ago

It's a great skirt and looks good in both photos, but pic #2 is by far the best look IMO.

  • replied 8 years ago

You look really good in the first image and fantastic int he second. It's not just more flattering, it's more cohesive and way more interesting. Very inspiring, super well done!

  • Jenava replied 8 years ago

Love it in #2, not so much in #1.

  • Thistle replied 8 years ago

Love#2! That rescues it for sure.
